Overview: On occasion, our renovation projects involve historic preservation. Such was the case with a local branch for the biggest retail bank in the U.S. on Banyan Blvd. in historic downtown West Palm Beach. The façade and arcade of the 1925 W.D. Fagan Building were preserved and new construction built around it. Our work included halving the building, which proved to be quite the structural challenge as the building was a combination of load-bearing wood framing and 1920’s era masonry. During the demolition phase, the building was in danger of collapse, so the structure was carefully shored while engineers were given the time to design for enhanced structural integrity. The object was to allow space for parking requirements and a drive-thru while preserving the historic façade. Restoration included reproducing original wrought iron gates, light fixtures, and concrete restoration. This nod to architecture of the boom days of West Palm Beach made for a very rewarding project. Our global retail banking client continues to expand its branch network throughout South Florida and GSD continues to be called back into action from Tequesta in the north to Homestead in the south.
