Aldi, the efficient German discount grocery chain, is reshaping the supermarket industry. The company has built a cult-like following, attracting customers that seek rock-bottom prices that often beat Walmart at its own low-price game.
We are excited to announce that Aldi selected GSD Contracting to renovate the Hialeah store. Aldi recognized GSD’s operating efficiencies and no frills approach for this project. GSD’s parent company, Platino Holdings, has built and renovated other Aldi grocery stores outside the state of Florida.
With more than 1,800 stores in 35 states, Aldi is focused on increasing its presence in the Midwest, the Mid-Atlantic, Florida and California. At this pace, Aldi will become the third largest supermarket in the United States with 2,500 stores by the end of 2022.
Disrupting the Traditional Supermarket Model
If you’ve ever been in an Aldi, you’ll notice immediately how different the store layout and aisles are compared to a typical U.S. supermarket. This is because of Aldi’s unique merchandising and pricing strategy. They want to offer products at the lowest prices and make it easy for customers to find what they want and checkout quickly.
This is why there are only five or six super-wide aisles with approximately 1,500 items compared to 35,000-40,000 products at a traditional supermarket. Most Aldi supermarkets are approximately 12,000 square feet. Compare that to a Walmart Supercenter, which is 175,000 square feet or more. Size and layout play an important factor in both Aldi’s brand and the small box footprint that helps to keep costs in check, which means more savings for customers.
Grocery Store Renovation Project Details
This renovation project consists of an interior addition and alteration of approximately 24,400 square feet. Aldi Hialeah requested an increased sales floor and an expansion of the backroom into an interior vacant space in the south end of the store. The project also entails updating finishes and lighting, as well as creating a more modern look for this location. Exterior CMU bearing walls and a steel stud tenant-demising wall define the existing space. Construction is expected to last 12 weeks once all the permits are secured.
