Goodwill Retail Store Gets a Makeover

Superstores are no longer solely the domain of Walmart and Target. Gulfstream Goodwill is now in the game with the opening of their new superstore at 4895 Okeechobee Blvd. in West Palm Beach. At 26,700 sq ft, GSD Contracting, renovation contractor, noted that this is the largest store in Gulfstream Goodwill’s history. Given the well-attended grand opening, it’s already a mecca for local shoppers.

At 40,000 sq ft, the Babies”R”Us store at this location had served local parents for many years, but closed in late 2012 as part of the company’s strategy to pair Toys “R” Us and Babies “R” Us stores side by side. They did just that at the new Palm Beach Outlets a few miles away.

GSD Contracting Appointed General Contractor

Owner of the 150,000 sq ft Gulfstream Plaza retail center, ICM Group, working in conjunction with architect Ric Slazyk of Arcwerks, hired GSD Contracting as general contractor on the project. Needless to say, this space was sorely in need of upgrades, including improvements to fire ratings and utility infrastructure as required by Palm Beach County.

GSD handled renovations to the entire center, adding facades, stone and lighting elements, and the subdividing of the 40,000 sq ft former Babies”R”Us space into two stores, one of which became the 26,700 sq ft Goodwill superstore. GSD undertook the interior renovations to the Goodwill superstore, as well.

Three Stores In One

Gulfstream Goodwill had a well thought out plan for the largest space they’ve ever leased. The majority of the space is given to donated general merchandise, the sale of which funds Goodwill’s mission of assisting people with disabilities and other barriers to employment to become self-sufficient, working members of our community.

The new superstore will also feature the non-profit organization’s first computer department, fully stocked with professionally refurbished computers fresh from its GoodGeeks® program.

The location will also house a Job Connection Center. This free job search and referral program links the unemployed, under-employed or those new to the community with area employers. Employment Specialists work individually with those in need of work to identify their work skills, experience and interests in order to provide job leads in the community based on their strengths. Speaking of jobs, the new superstore created 15 new jobs for people in the community—everything from cashiers to clerks to wares processors.

The new Goodwill superstore replaces the location at 1837 N. Military Trail and is nearly twice that store’s size. As the cornerstone tenant in this center, it has been renamed Gulfstream Plaza.
